Open Access Week 2012 - info and assistance for researchers --

Open Access Week is being celebrated by libraries and other organisations worldwide 22-28 October 2012.

The term 'Open Access' refers to making scholarly literature and research data freely available to anyone who might wish to use it.

Open Access is seen by many as a tool for increasing research impact and promoting community engagement with universities. Some people fear its effect on the academic publishing industry, whilst others believe Open Access can help protect academic freedoms from restrictive copyright regimes and onerous contractual arrangements around funding grants.

Academic staff and research students at the University of Melbourne have access to a range of services and tools relating to Open Access publishing:

Local events for Open Access Week 2012:

  • The University Library hosted a staff forum on Open Access on Thursday 18 October 2012.

  • The librarians' association VALA will hold an Open Access seminar at the University of Melbourne on Wednesday 24 October 2012 - non-members are welcome and entry is free.

  • The Deakin University Library will host an Open Access symposium on Thursday 25 October 2012.
