Library borrowing memberships
Library borrowing is available to current University of Melbourne staff and students through their staff/student identification card and a barcode. For those who are not current University of Melbourne staff or students there are a range of memberships as listed below. Please note that these memberships only cover borrowing library materials, and do not include access to electronic resources.
The Library offers three categories of memberships: non-paying, concession paying and full paying. These are described below. The goods and services tax (GST) applies to all paying categories of Library borrowing membership.
You must check with Loans staff as to your borrowing entitlements.
Non-paying membership
You may be entitled to a non-paying membership if you are:
- A retired staff member from the University with 15 years service or more (this allows borrowing of 10 items of low-use material only)
- A visiting scholar or associated academic staff working within a faculty at the University (this allows 100 items of high- and low-use material, journals and remote online access to selected resources)
- A honours or postgraduate student at the University and you are not eligible for a current student card from Student Administration but need to use the Library with departmental permission (this allows 10 items of low-use material and media)
- A higher degree student at the University and you are not eligible for a current student card from Student Administration but need to use the Library with departmental permission (this allows 60 items of low-use material, journals and remote online access to selected resources)
- A staff member of an organisation affiliated with the University and you are not eligible for a University staff card from Human Resources (this allows 10 items of low-use material). This category includes the Committee of Convocation.
For the exceptions above, complete the relevant section of the membership application form (see below).
You may also be entitled to a non-paying membership if you are a student or staff member of a tertiary institution outside Victoria (this allows 10 items of low-use material only).
Concession paying membership
You may be entitled to a concession paying membership if you are:
