How to access RefWorks


The University makes RefWorks available to its Students and staff  (you access it via the web).

Access RefWorks directly. You will need to create a user name and set a password to login (you need an email too).



  1. Click on the link Sign up for an Individual Account. Complete the form, and choose a Login Name and Password. 
  2. Click on the Register button to set up your account. You will have immediate access to RefWorks, and you will receive an email confirming your login name and password*.
  3. Return users login with your RefWorks login name and password. 
*Your sign-up confirmation email  will a Group Code for University of Melbourne users (keep it handy)


Using RefWorks with Microsoft Word

The Write-N-Cite plugin can be downloaded or go to your RefWorks database select Tools> Write-N-Cite to download the software.

Off-campus users –  you will need to load the WNC Proxy Server Utility. Full instructions are available from the help page.

Windows users

•    Create a RefWorks account if you have not already done this
•    From the Start Menu select Programs and then RefWorks
•    Select the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility
•    Enter http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
•    Click OK

Mac users

•    Create a RefWorks account if you have not already done this
•    Activate Write-N-Cite
•    Select Preferences from the Write-N-Cite menu
•    Enter  http://ezp.lib.unimelb.edu.au/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
•    Restart Write-N-Cite for this proxy configuration to take effect


One Line/Cite View (no plugin required)

•    One Line cite can be used with any word processing software. For more information please check the library RefWorks LibGuide

 

Adding references from library databases

Instructions for specific databases are available. References can be added to RefWorks several ways:

•    Direct Export allows you to export records from participating databases directly into RefWorks.

•    Import Filters you are able to save records as text files and use import filters to import records.

•    Search and import publicly available catalogues from RefWorks (including unimelb & and PubMed).


RefShare

RefShare allows you to share your references with others, setting preferences for sharing. The URL generated by RefShare can be embedded in a page (such as a blog or the LMS) or emailed to others.

Shared folders can be used by:
•    Groups of students wanting to share references for a group project
•    Academics to create reading lists for their students, with on-campus and off-campus access to the full text of many documents
•    Researchers to share references when working collaboratively with other Unversity of Melbourne researchers or those in other institutions
Note: due to copyright laws and licensing agreements, access to full text material is restricted to University of Melbourne staff and students.
